Industrial Agriculture Accountability Act

What it does

If Congress passes it, the Industrial Agriculture Accountability Act would require meat and poultry corporations and industrial operators to register with USDA and submit disaster preparedness plans, which would shift liability for responsible disaster mitigation from the public to those entities. The bill would also end line-speed increases and meatpacker self-inspection programs for animal slaughter, prohibit slaughter of all downed animals and require more humane treatment of livestock transported for long periods.

The Industrial Agriculture Accountability Act is a bicameral bill, which means it has some support in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Senators Cory Booker, Brian Schatz and Elizabeth Warren and Representatives Jim McGovern, Jahana Hayes, Eleanor Norton, Earl Blumenauer, Ro Khanna, Raja Krishnamoorthi and Grace Meng introduced the bill. In the Senate, this bill is referred to as S.272 and these Senators are already supporting the bill. In the House, this bill is referred to as H.R.805 and these Representatives are already supporting the bill.

This bill is endorsed by over sixty organizations, including the American Grassfed Association,  American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), HEAL Food Alliance, Immigrant Alliance for Justice and Equity and Natural Resources Defense Council.
