What's growing in your garden right now?
I have rattlesnake string beans just coming, raspberries just ending, lettuce gone to pot, new chickens moving into the coop as soon as I finish building and installing the door.
Those who know me won’t be surprised that I say I have a shady garden. This time, what I mean is that I can’t grow very many veggies that like sun. So I’m trying to coax a tomato and a pepper to grow. What shady crops have you grown in shaded, clay-rich soils?
Basil, rutabagas, potatoes (red and gold), sweet potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, onions, yellow crooknecks, pumpkins, peas, beans, beets, cabbage, carrots, collards, chard, kale, cucumbers, delicata, turnips, herbs, bok choy, romaine and other lettuce and strawberries
Tomatoes (leaf-footed beetles!), eggplant, basil, cucumbers, jalapenos, dill, cilantro, parsley, oregano, okra and mushrooms.
I’m really excited about the heirloom tomatoes I got this year – Yellow Topaz, White Currant, San Marzano, and Polish Linguisa. I also have heirloom peppers, Hungarian Paprika, cucumbers, Jalapenos, and lots of herbs. I can’t wait to make salsa with my own tomatoes, jalapenos, and cilantro!
Raspberries, tomatoes, green beans, basil and peppers. Raspberries just starting to ripen. Nothing beats fresh raspberries!
